Have just returned from my fourth trip to Malawi. This time my group included 6 amazing teenagers who were all committed to doing something about poverty, AIDS and orphans in this beautiful country. We spent time in a convent in Mchinji working with primary school students, doing art and educational projects, planting beans on the farm, and even having an evening of disco!! The kids got emotional when the youngest orphans were fed their one meal of the day and then sang to my group saying "goodbye doesn't mean forever, we will meet again in the future". Then we moved on to the lake area, Senga Bay where we worked in a local clinic, fitted reading glasses for local farmers, played with children in a nutrition center and helped moving bricks for an orphanage being built. I think this was a trip these teens will never forget and I hope it will inspire them to being involved globally for the rest of their lives. It is hard to turn one's back on these areas of extreme poverty once you have looked into the eyes of the children and held their hands.
